This Gibbston River Trail begins at the eastern end of the AJ Hackett Kawarau Bungy Centre car park.
The trail winds along the terrace, the Kawarau River carving amongst the cliffs, below. The vineyards of Gibbston extend across the valley, and into the foothills of the mountains to the south.
Gibbston is bursting with iconic wineries, sumptuous restaurants, and cellar doors that are open for tastings, tours and sales - take your time to explore and enjoy everything Gibbston has to offer.
Some of the wineries, restaurants and taverns require a crossing of the highway - take extra care with this road!
Follow signs for the award-winning Gibbston Valley Winery Restaurant, plus there is a great gift store, cheese shop and cafe and bike hire center located at the Winery.

Gibbston River Trail passes the stunning, international award-winning Peregrine Winery, the building sits lightly on the landscape, nestled in the vines. Inspired by Peregrine (native falcon or Karearea) in flight, this structure has won awards from London-based Architecture Review magazine and the NZ Institute of Architects.

Peregrine WinesEnjoy riding through the vines and as you approach Coalpit Road (just past the bridge at Camp Creek), cross the highway again to find the Gibbston Tavern, sample local craft and enjoy hearty, delicious food.

Mt Rosa Cellar Door & KitchenWhen you get to the Gibbston Back Road you've reached the end of the trail. The much anticipated Kawarau Gorge Trail will connect to the Gibbston River Trail near the Nevis Bluff. Works are currently underway for the construction of this trail (by Southern Lakes Trails Trust), and the trail is expected to be open to the public in 2026.
To return, head back on the trail and make your way back towards the Kawarau Suspension Bridge, your options from here are to return to Arrowtown via the Arrow River Bridges Trail or back to Queenstown via the Twin Rivers Trail or if you are relaxing at one of the wineries, call for a transport pick-up for you and your bikes.
