Ride Responsibly.
Respect the Trails.

The Queenstown Trails are for everyone - walkers, runners, families, e-bikes, and pedal-powered riders. Our shared-use network winds through alpine landscapes, lakesides, and countryside, and we want all trail users to feel safe, welcome, and confident.

Following a few simple guidelines helps keep our trails enjoyable, accessible, and protected for future generations.

Trail Etiquette

Be Courteous & Share the Trail

  • Keep left.

  • Give a friendly warning when overtaking - a bell or a clear verbal call.

  • Slow down when approaching others and give way to pedestrians.

Ride in Control

  • Adjust your speed for corners, blind spots and downhill sections.

  • Expect walkers, children, dogs, and riders of all abilities.

  • Be predictable and avoid sudden movements.

Respect the Environment

  • Stay on the designated trail - don’t cut corners or take shortcuts.

  • Take all rubbish with you.

  • Protect fragile areas and follow any trail signage or closures.

Be Aware of Others

  • Ride single file when the trail is narrow.

  • Move aside if you stop to take photos or check your map.

  • Keep dogs close and ensure they don’t block the trail.

Riding Safely

Know the Terrain

Trail surfaces change from smooth gravel to compact dirt to loose stones. Ride to the conditions, especially after rain or during high-traffic periods.

Choose Routes That Match Your Ability

Some sections are steep or narrow with drop-offs. If you’re unsure, hop off and walk. There’s no shame in staying safe.

Check Weather & Conditions

Queenstown’s alpine weather can change quickly. Look ahead at forecasts and check for any trail updates before heading out.

Be Prepared

Bring water, layers, a phone, and basic repair tools. For more guidance, see our What to Pack page.

E-motorbikes Prohibited

E-motorbikes are different from pedal-assist e-bikes and are not permitted on the Queenstown Trails network. If your bike has a throttle and is designed to operate like a motorcycle, please leave it off the trails.

Before you ride, check that:

  • Your bike is pedal-assisted, rather than throttle-powered

  • It meets the requirements for an e-bike, rather than an e-motorbike

  • You stay on designated trails and follow the Queenstown Trails Code of Conduct

  • If you’re unsure whether your bike is permitted, check before you ride

For full information on e-motorbike requirements, including where they can be ridden and whether registration is required, see QLDC’s e-motorbike guidance.

Thank you for respecting the trails and helping us keep the Queenstown network safe and enjoyable for everyone.
