Dramatic Landscape & Dark Skies
At the head of the Kawarau Gorge lies Gibbston — nestled amongst rugged schist mountains and dramatic rock bluffs. The Kawarau River carves through the terraced valley, a seasonal mahinga kai (food-gathering) site for Ngāi Tahu that from the 1860s formed a prominent travel route for prospectors mining the Kawarau River and heading to the goldfields of the Whakatipu.
After the gold rush, pastoral farms and sheep stations became dominant. In the 1980s the first commercial vines were planted, followed closely by the establishment of commercial bungy jumping at the historic Kawarau Bridge. Gibbston is famed for pioneering viticulture in the region, and like the rest of Queenstown, has embraced adventure — with plenty of options for an adrenaline fix.
To complement the wine, food and adventure, Gibbston offers boutique accommodation and relaxing spa experiences. Gibbston at night is something special — part of the Kawarau Gibbston International Dark Sky Park, the night skies are bright and clear, offering incredible star-gazing.
Gibbston, the Valley of the Vines, invites indulgence, exploration and relaxation.
