Mt Beetham Trail
Accessed from the Arrow River Bridges Trail, head up Tobins Track and then onto the Mt Beetham Summit Trail. The punchy climb is rewarded with 360 degree views of the basin, lakes and mountains!
1.8km
30 min up, 20 min down
A rewarding walking-only summit hike with incredible 360° views over the Whakatipu Basin - and a genuine sense of having earned them. The trailhead sits just around the bend from the viewing benches at the top of Tobins Track, above Arrowtown. Allow around 30 minutes to walk from the Arrow River to this point (bikes are welcome on Tobins Track but must be left at the bench before the Mt Beetham trail begins). At 1.8km return with 272m of elevation gain, it's a short but serious climb - a proper calf-burner. Natural foot placements help along the way, and the trail is marked by orange poles. The Mt Beetham Summit trail is best in dry conditions and grippy shoes are recommended - it can be slippery on the descent. At the top, the views across to Crown Peak, Brow Peak, Coronet Peak and the surrounding ranges are spectacular. Old mining tracks are visible across the hills - a reminder of Arrowtown's rich goldmining heritage. Take a picnic up and take some time to soak in the incredible views.
