Kelvin Peninsula Sculpture Trail
3.5km loop
~1 hr
Grade
2
Part of the Kelvin Heights Trail, this lovely 3.5km loop around Kelvin Peninsula can be enjoyed clockwise or anti-clockwise and is dotted with four striking sculptures by New Zealand artists — a gift to the local community from a generous anonymous art lover.
Starting at the lake edge at the end of Grove Lane, follow the western side of the peninsula (clockwise) along the lake’s edge past the golf course (watch out for golfers on the tee). The first sculpture is Wakatipu Kuikui by Mark Hill — an impressive figure with wild hair catching the wind. The trail continues through forest to Terry’s Cove (named after the Queenstown Trails Trust’s founding Chairman, Terry Stevens), a wonderful lookout point toward Cecil and Walter Peak. Next, Thru Link to Peak by Shane Woolridge — 25 tonnes of schist and steel that perfectly frames Walter Peak across the lake. Then The Kelvin Peninsula Goats by Jeff Thompson, and finally Presence by Mark Hill — a tree spirit that blends so well with the surrounding forest it catches you by surprise.
From Kelvin Grove Beach, continue north on the Kelvin Heights Trail toward Frankton, or head south to the Jacks Point Trail via Jardine Park.
Note: Jacks Point is a Grade 4 trail.
