Wharehuanui Trail
Arrowtown to Arthurs Point
13km one way
1.5 - 2hrs bike
3hrs walk
Grade
2
A beautiful meandering trail running along the northern side of the Whakatipu Basin, connecting Arthurs Point to Arrowtown and creating a link that ties into the Coronet Loop and MTB trail network at the Dan O’Connell Track.
Starting beside Gantley’s Tavern in Arthurs Point, the trail heads east beside the road before crossing Malaghans Road and climbing gently via switchbacks toward Coronet Peak’s foothills. The elevated views across the Whakatipu Basin are gorgeous. The trail winds in and out of the foothills over the Kuperus Crossing and to the Dan O’Connell hub — entry point to the Mahu Whenua Trails network, Coronet Loop and the MTB flow trails including Hot Rod.
The Wharehuanui Trail shares a short section of Coronet Peak Station Road — ride with care before rejoining the off-road trail.
It then follows beside Malaghans Road and drops down to Mill Creek Reserve, where catchment restoration work is doing an incredible job of improving the water quality of the main feeder stream to Lake Hayes.
The trail continues into Millbrook, through the famous golf course and home of the NZ Open, joining the Countryside Trail at Streamside Lane. From here, head east through Millbrook to Arrowtown, or south toward Lake Hayes. The full Arthurs Point to Arrowtown ride is 16.5km, including the Countryside Trail section.
