A local favourite - the Hugo Tunnel Loop is a 6.7km circuit starting and finishing in Arthurs Point.
From the Queenstown Trails plinth outside Gantleys Tavern, head down the hill on the Arthrus Point Trail shared pathway, to where the Shotover Gorge Trail begins on Atley Road. Soak up the expansive views over the Kimi-ākau/Shotover River before descending through the rich, green forest toward the Hugo Tunnel.
Through the Hugo Tunnel, climb the switch backs of Lyttles Ladder - this incredible section of trail has been constructed through challenging terrain, and provides dramatic views over the Kimi-ākau/Shotover River Gorge. At Buck's Balcony the trail traverses above the river before winding towards the Tunnel Bypass intersection. Follow the Tunnel Bypass route down a short section of switch backs before heading out to Littles Road. The Littles Road basin reveals stunning views of the surrounding mountains, cliffs and rolling pastoral land.
Cross Littles Road with care, before following the trail through the beautifully planted wetland, and up the last set of zig-zags through a recently planted section of NZ Mountain Beech. At the Wharehuanui Trail plinth, turn back towards Arthurs Point, following the foot of Coronet Peak before finishing the loop back outside Gantleys.
